Prior to 1993, halftime at the big game was comprised mostly of college marching bands. Only a couple known musicians like Chubby Checker and Gloria Estefan had ever performed at halftime.
That all changed at Super Bowl XXVII when the King of Pop took it to a whole new level of spectacle that we see today.
